West Texas On My Mind: Visiting West Texas

There is something about being in the desert landscape of West Texas in the winter that feeds me in a way no other place can. The land, the animals, the sunsets and the stars....the ruggedness of the earth and the way the wind blows are all things I intensely connect to. Everything is stripped down to its core, unable to hide who or what they are and it leaves no room for ego. And maybe that's what it is I connect to. It's a break from ego, from all the things we as humans tend to hide behind to feel important or good enough or the walls we put up just to make it through another day. For me all of those disappear and I am fully able to exhale. I mean a real and full exhale.
I spent last week visiting west Texas in the areas around Terlingua and Lajitas with a couple of life long friends...well they're family at this point. Like a lot of people out there, they have been through quite a lot the last few years, especially recently. I won't get in to the details, that's their story to tell should they choose to, but they were (we all were) in need of a reset. A place to go and surround ourselves with something bigger than we were. And as it always does, the desert landscape of West Texas did exactly that.
There was no rush to our time there. We rolled out of the tents one at a time as we were ready. We made campfire coffee and breakfast, took a thousand pictures of the local flora and fauna and we hiked and spent our evenings around the campfire gazing up at a billion stars. Reset complete. I know this type of adventure or rest isn't for everybody but I do genuinely hope that every person on this earth has something like it. Something or some place that allows them to be completely who they are. To let the ego go and the walls down and just be. And if by chance you haven't found that place yet, you can borrow mine until you do. Cheers to All The Things that inspire you and the life you want to live!
